The Washington Wizards will be without 2025 first-round pick Tre Johnson for an ‘undetermined amount of time,’ as he has been diagnosed with a strained left hip flexor.
Head coach Brian Keefe announced the injury after Monday’s practice, saying the sixth overall pick will be out for now and ‘we’ll know more in a couple of weeks.’
“We’ll know more here in a couple of weeks, but he’s had a good start to the season for a guy who was playing through a lot of pain, averaging almost 12 points a game and close to 40 percent from 3,” Keefe said.
Johnson has been dealing with the injury since his time at Texas, Keefe revealed, and had been on a minutes restriction as a pro because of the injury – and it never truly affected his availability overall, as he missed just two games for the Longhorns last season and played in each of the Wizards’ first 15 games through Friday’s loss to Toronto.
However, Johnson left Friday’s game against the Raptors early, and then sat out Saturday’s game against Chicago before the team shut him down with no timetable – although Josh Robbins of The Athletic notes similar injuries often have a two-to-four-week timetable.
“I’ve been impressed with him and his ability to play through some pain. That’s a pretty tough kid right there,” Keefe said.
Johnson has averaged 11.5 points per game in his 15 games, shooting 44.5 percent overall – including 39.5 percent from beyond the arc – in 24.2 minutes per game, and he had 14 points in 19 minutes before against Toronto.
