This week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash was joined in studio by new Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, (GSCM), CEO Dr. Shernette Grant, Girl Scout Alum Sydney Kuck and Girl Scout Shalisa Ibad to talk about their new vision statement, "Bridging gaps in central Maryland where every girl finds relevance and thrives in a safe & welcoming space," as well as their positive experiences and accomplishments with the non-profit organization that provides programs and activities that help girls develop courage, confidence and character in order to develop the next generation of female leaders.

Dr. Grant talked about how her leadership positions and experience including writing a book entitled, "Unorthodox Leadership, A Guide for Real People in Real Organizations," have helped her succeed already in Baltimore and Central Maryland and to carry out the Girl Scout mission. Dr. Grant shared how she just completed a Conversations with the CEO series where she visited the counties the council serves-Harford, Howard, Carroll, Anne Arundel, Baltimore City and County.

Sydney and Shalisa talked about the impact Girl Scouting has has on their lives. Both have earned the Girl Scouts' highest award, the Gold Award for Seniors and Ambassadors, (high school age girls). The Gold Award allows girls to use all the skills they've learned throughout their Girl Scout experience to solve or help fix a problem in their community by implementing a sustainable solution. Sydney received a full scholarship to the University of Mary Washington in part because she is a Gold Award Girl Scout. She just completed her freshman year.

Both Sydney and Shalisa also served as Shadow Girl Scouts for GSCM's Annual Distinguished Women Awards where each of the honorees shared professional insights and allowed Girl Scouts like Sydney and Shalisa to shadow them for the day in their professional roles for valuable experience. Shalisa also served as a girl member of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Board of Directors. Both Sydney and Shalisa have demonstrated their ability to lead.
