Marching Band

*lights candle - Hi, I'm StyckMan. I am 100% a band nerd. I joined my high school marching band to chase a girl. I've been married to that girl for 27 years. My children marched in the same high school band that I did. It's safe to say that we are a BAND FAMILY.

I'll even go as far to say, I would not have made it through high school had it not been for the band program. I was a pretty terrible school student, but my band forcred me to do better in school so I could stay in the band. I was a pretty good band student. Don't mis-read that and assume I'm a good musician. :-)

Band, for me, was way more than just a music experience. Band builds character. It taught me how to win and be humble, how to lose and still hold my head high. It taught me out to work in large groups. It taught me how to work in small groups. It taught me how to work alone...even though working alone for me isn't all that fun.

Several years after I graduated high school, I got the opportunty to talk to my old band directer and thank him. I told him, "you made me a far better me than you ever did musician." as it came out of my mouth, I thought "well that sounded rude"... I said "please take that as a compliment, because I'm 'ME' for a living." When I'm back home and drive past his house... I always stop to talk to him if i see him out.

CBS This Morning did a story on a young boy named Henry Boyd. See, Henry is 9 and already knows that he wants to be a band kid.

I hope in 2029 I'm still around to see CBS This Morning's follow up to this story.
