A mom in Canada is warning caregivers and other parents after a scary incident with her toddler and hand sanitizer. Nikki Teixeira says her 18-month-old son, Logan, was being watched by his grandma, who handed him what she thought was a fruit puree pouch, but it was actually hand sanitizer. This stuff was in a pouch, like those snacks for kids, and had a "Trolls" movie theme, so at first glance, it looks like food.
The grandmother saw it in the diaper bag and thought it was a snack for her grandson, but immediately after he took a sip, she knew something was wrong. Logan turned red and started coughing and that's when the granny took a closer look at the package and saw it was hand sanitizer. She called 911 and Logan was getting a little drowsy, then five minutes later he was falling asleep. Paramedics took him to the hospital, but luckily, he didn't experience any medical complications.
Since this event, the company that makes the product, sold under the brand Smart Care, has removed it from stores. Now this mom is just trying to get the word out so this doesn't happen to anyone else. And she's not the only one concerned. The head of the FDA is also warning people about hand sanitizers packaged in everything from kids' food pouches to beer cans.
