You have to go all the way back to 2006 to find the last time the Dixie Chicks released a new album. That’s all about to change.

Natalie Maines took to Instagram to give fans the exciting news as the Dixie Chicks eighth studio album now has an official release date. Gaslighter will now be released on July 17, just a few months after its original May 1 release date was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although it’s been 14 years since their last album Taking the Long Way, the Dixie Chicks had already shared the title track off their upcoming record to give fans a preview of what’s to come.

“Gaslighter” was co-written with and produced by Jack Antonoff, who helped produce the whole record. The band didn’t plan to write the entire album with Antonoff, but once they put “Gaslighter” together they found the song they wanted and knew the collaboration had to happen.

The album was inspired by Maines’ divorce from her ex-husband Adrian Pasdar and the ensuing legal battle. As she started going through the process, she felt inspired to start writing music again.

Despite the lengthy amount of time between albums, the Dixie Chicks continued to tour after 2006 including a lengthy jaunt into North America in 2016. This marked the group’s first full-fledged headlining tour in America in a decade. While there’s currently no tour planned to support the album, the band’s website does have a tour section with the message “long time gone… But coming soon!”
