(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One person died, and dozens of others were displaced after a massive fire in an apartment complex in far northwest suburban Woodstock, local fire officials said.

Fire crews were sent to the two-story building located on St. Johns Road near Hickory Road shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials say the quick-spreading fire, which was raised to the fifth alarm level, caused significant damage to at least a dozen units in the building.

Three people were hospitalized from the fire, including one man who died from his injuries. An adult woman and a baby were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, and no firefighters were injured.

Officials said half of the building’s 24 units were left with “significant damage,” which meant more than 30 people were displaced. The American Red Cross is working to help assist those residents find essential living needs and temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
