1 killed, 3 injured in 6-car pileup crash in Western Springs

WESTERN SPRINGS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - One person was killed, and three others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in suburban Western Springs Thursday afternoon.

The crash scene was like something you might see on an interstate, not Ogden Avenue. Six vehicles were involved, three badly mangled. Clearly speed was a factor, one person who lives near the scene said. The speed limit is 35 mph.

It happened at Ogden and Gilberts, which has two lanes in each direction.

Another witness said someone was trying to pass a car and then clipped the back of a pick-up that spun out, causing the chain-reaction crash.

CBS- 2’s Kris Habermehl was overhead in the chopper.

“This is one of the worst crashes I’ve seen on a surface street in a long, long time,” Habermehl said.

One person was dead at the scene, according to police. Three others were hospitalized, two in serious condition, one in stable condition.

Police were at the scene until about 10pm.

The crash remains under investigation.
