CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police are still looking for a group of thieves who made off with several vehicles from a far South Side Ford plant Wednesday.
It happened early in the morning, and police sources told CBS 2 that the 10 cars were stolen fresh off the assembly line from the South Deering plant, located near 122nd Street and Stony Island Avenue.
The station also reported that as many as 10 suspects got away with mainly Lincolns, which were thought to be valued at nearly $750,000.
A 2023 National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) report listed Illinois as the state with the fifth-highest rate of car thefts in the country.
NICB data showed that there were nearly 39,000 cars stolen in Illinois in 2022, which translated to nine out of every 1,000 cars in the state.
