CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago’s official Christmas Tree is officially shining bright in Millennium Park.
Holiday cheer may have been the only warm thing about the annual tree lighting ceremony Friday night, as many braved bitter cold temperatures to hear live music, shop from local vendors and, of course, see the City of Chicago Christmas Tree.
“This is one of the most important moments on our calendar as a city,” Mayor Lightfoot told the crowd. “People look forward to being out here. This holiday season really kicks into high gear as soon as we light that tree.”
Lorenzo, who attended the ceremony, said there’s no doubt in his mind: nothing beats the holidays in downtown Chicago.
“All the ice skating, the pop-up shops, tree lightings and all the lights,” he said. “It’s big for our city and it doesn’t get much better than that,” Lorenzo said.
And like a true Chicagoan, he asked “what cold?”
“I know it’s really cold when my eyelashes start freezing. They didn’t freeze today, so I’m good,” Lorenzo added.
The 55-foot Colorado Blue Spruce was donated to the city by a Morton Grove family.
