ROSEMONT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- O'Hare Airport's Noise Compatibility Commission has identified 11 schools that may get federal help with sound insulation after changes at the airport.
Six suburban schools and five on the northwest side of Chicago may qualify for grants from Federal Aviation Administration to tamp down the noise from jets overhead.
The Daily Herald reports the city aviation department has resumed its school sound installation program after about a 10-year break. Beaubien Elementary, Brickton Montessori, Prussing Elementary, and St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine schools in Chicago could get reimbursed for expenses to quiet classrooms, libraries, auditoriums and offices.
The six suburban schools that qualify for relief include: Child’s Voice in Wood Dale, Iroquois Community School in Des Plaines, OneSchool Global’s Chicago campus and Salt Creek Elementary School — both in Elk Grove Village, Ralph J. Frost Academy in Park Ridge, and Spring Hills Elementary School in Roselle.
To be eligible for funding, schools must have an annual average sound level of 60 decibels or higher, according to the Daily Herald. Also, interior sound levels from aircrafts with windows closed during normal operating hours must be equal to or greater than 45 decibels.
One year ago, the city celebrated the grand opening of a remodeled and expanded terminal five.
