2 firefighters injured in high-rise fire on Jewelers Row in the Loop

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two firefighters were injured Thursday morning fighting an extra alarm fire on the 10th floor of a high-rise on Jewelers Row in the Loop.

According to Chicago police and fire officials, the fire started around 4 a.m. on the 10th floor of the Mallers building on Wabash and Madison. It is a 22-story building that houses many jewelers.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Richard C. Ford II said two firefighters were overcome by heat and exhaustion and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

"On original entry, smoke actually from the 10th floor had buckled down to the lobby. You couldn't see to the back of the lobby. So they started ventilating, they got the elevators pulled down, they came down and hunked up the stairwells, as usual practice, to the 10th floor. They found where the fire was, forced entry, and that took a lot of time. The men and women did an excellent job," Cmsr. Ford said.

No other injuries or displacements have been reported so far, police said.

About 200 firefighters worked to extinguished the blaze. Chicago fire officials said the fire had been extinguished extinguished the fire by 5:28 a.m., the Sun-Times reported.

Street closures and traffic reroutes have been reported as responders remain on the scene.

According to CTA, southbound buses, including No. 6, 36 and 62 were temporarily rerouted.
