CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – More than 200 libraries across Illinois will share nearly $6 million in COVID-19 relief grants from the Illinois Secretary of State's office.
Spokesman Henry Haupt said some of the grants will help libraries expand online access and training programs to assist more people looking for work.
"This is an effort to allow people to continue to look for jobs and employment opportunities through their local library," said Haupt.
Haupt said libraries will also receive money to give more visitors access to the internet.
Some of the money will be used to help libraries protect their workers and visitors from COVID-19.
"It focuses on efforts to restore the libraries' capacity to operate and to offer clean and safe library spaces while preventing the spread of COVID-19," said Haupt.
The grants have been awarded to public libraries, as well as to schools and universities.
