CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 2023 Chicago Marathon was one for the history books, led by 23-year-old Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum, who set a new world record when he crossed the finish in 2:00:35.
Champions in the women’s division and both wheelchair divisions set Chicago Marathon course records, and Des Linden broke Deena Kastor’s masters record — “masters” denoting a division for racers over the age of 35 — which had stood for eight years.
The race, though, was about much more for the over 47,000 people who were expected to participate in the 45th Chicago Marathon. WBBM's Nancy Harty, as well as social media editors AnnMarie Welser and Sara Dingmann, were out in the field Sunday to capture the memorable moments and beautiful scenes from race day. Their photos and videos are below.
Many Chicago Marathon runners showed up to the race in bathrobes, which were easy — and perhaps more importantly, warm — layer to shed. Temperatures were in the 40s before the race kicked off.
