CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Today is Election Day in Chicago, but we don't expect to know the winner of the mayor's race for several weeks.
Unless there’s a lightning strike, the mayor’s race is headed for a runoff. With incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot facing eight credible challengers, no single candidate is likely to get the more than 50% of the vote needed to win outright.
The mayor has campaigned on the strength of the city’s COVID recovery and planned redevelopment of the South and West Sides.
Former schools chief Paul Vallas has focused largely on promises to fight crime more aggressively.
U.S. Congressman Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson have each sought to be seen as the true progressive voice, but Johnson has had the help of the Chicago Teachers Union.
The other candidates in the race are businessman and philanthropist Willie Wilson, Alderpersons Sophia King and Roderick Sawyer, State Representative Kam Buckner, and community activist Ja’Mal Green.
The top two finishers will go to the April runoff.
WBBM Newsradio’s exclusive election coverage begins at 7 p.m. tonight.
