(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A woman and several dogs escaped a house fire in West Chicago unharmed Thursday, but West Chicago Fire Chief Patrick Tanner said three other dogs died in the blaze.

“I don’t have an exact count because, when we got there, they were in the backyard, they were with neighbors, there were quite a few,” Tanner said. “I do know there was at least 10, and maybe a couple more than that. Unfortunately, three of these dogs did not survive the fire.”

Tanner said by the time firefighters arrived at the property, located in the 500 block of Claremont Avenue, the fire had already spread throughout much of the home.

The home was full of what Tanner described as “personal belongings,” which he said made it more difficult for his personnel to fight the fire.

The fire chief added West Chicago officials are looking into whether the number of dogs in the home or the amount of material that was kept in it violated any ordinances.
