CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Dozens of dogs are heading to Chicago from a storm-tossed shelter in Texas.

PAWS Chicago is opening its doors to 31 dogs from a shelter in Pasadena, Texas. An EF-3 tornado hit the Houston suburb last week.

PAWS chicago CEO Susanna Wickham said the Texas shelter is making room for pets that were displaced during the storm.

"People start to relinquish pets or the shelter system may decide that pets are not gonna be reclaimed, so what we're doing is making room for those newly displaced pets, so they can be reunited with their owners."

The dogs will arrive in Chicago next week. They will be examined, spayed, or neutered upon arrival. Some will be available for adoption within a matter of days.
