(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Indiana State police continue to investigate Wednesday's overnight two-car crash on eastbound I-80/94 that killed a 6-year-old girl and left four others critically injured.

At around 1:30 a.m., police said a 2014 Volvo semi carrying a loaded trailer of mail rear-ended a silver 2016 Nissan Altima in the right lane at the 7.5 mile-marker, about 1.5 miles east of Burr near Gary. Troopers described the crash causing "catastrophic damage."

Two adults and three children were in the Nissan, with none of the children properly restrained in child safety seats, police said. All had to be extricated from the vehicle. One of the children, a 6-year-old girl, died while in transport to an area hospital.

The driver of the Nissan, 27-year-old Ta'Quana L. Crawford of Milwaukee, along with the other passengers suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.

The semi driver, 49-year-old Orlando Shaw of Wheeling was uninjured, police said.

Charges have yet to be filed, with the ISP noting the investigation remains in its early stages.
