CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Although the Chicago Air and Water Show was cancelled this year, this weekend new and reimagined air show events will occur in its place.

The event, "City of Chicago presents the U.S. Navy Blue Angels", will be a special solo demonstration by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels along the lakefront on Aug. 21 and 22 from noon to 1 p.m. Plus, on Aug. 20, the Blue Angels will hold practice runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In a typical year, the Chicago Air & Water Show lasts five hours and has multiple performers.

The mission of the Blue Angels is to showcase the teamwork and professionalism of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps through flight demonstrations and community outreach while inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country

Voice of the Show

Herb Hunter – “Millions know him as ‘the voice’ of the Chicago Air and Water Show that dazzles hundreds of thousands every year along the lakefront,” according to a City statement. “He has become a household name among Chicago fans and the air show industry nationwide. And his reputation as a consummate professional who talks the talk and walks the walk continues to grow today.

"Watching Herb in action on the announcer's stand, it becomes obvious that reading notes while performers dazzle spellbound fans zooming through the sky is only part of what makes Herb's announcing so impressive."

Best Viewing

The City of Chicago said the best viewing locations along the lakefront are between Oak Street and Fullerton Avenue. North Avenue Beach, located at 1600 N. Lake Shore Dr., is the center of the show.
