The civil trial started Monday, more than five years after Adam Toledo was shot and killed by a former Chicago police officer.
Testimony in the wrongful death lawsuit by Toledo’s family filed against Eric Stillman and the Chicago Police Department is likely to center on police foot pursuits and use of force.
Toledo's mother cried as her attorney talked to reporters before court.
In March of 2021, Officer Stillman shot the 13-year-old in an alley in Little Village after a chase following a shooting nearby.
Police body cam video shows Stillman tell Toledo to show his hands and shoot him less than a second after the boy dropped a gun behind a fence.
COPA recommended Stillman be fired but former police Superintendent David Brown disagreed, instead recommending a short suspension.
Former State's Attorney Kim Foxx declined to criminally charge Stillman.
