
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- On this Overdose Awareness Day, Cook County Health officials were trying to get people to look at substance use disorder in a different way.
Dr. Steven Aks, Emergency Room physician and chief of toxicology for Cook County Health, said society needs to destigmatize drug addiction, especially opioid abuse.
He says it’s an illness like asthma or diabetes.
As such, it’s an illness that can touch anybody, he said. And Cook County has several programs that can help and people should not shy away from getting the help, Aks said.
