(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago City Council is expected to give approve an affordable housing development at the western end of the 606 Trail in the gentrifying Logan Square neighborhood.

Ward 26 Ald. Roberto Maldonado said “it’s not easy to fight gentrification,” noting that he’s worked on the plan for seven years.

The Plan Commission voted to approve the project.

Encuentro Square, as the development is being called, is planned for city-owned property on the 3700 block of West Cortland Street. There will be 89 units in the first phase.

Community activists applaud the project in a neighborhood that has lost long-time residents.

Ground is expected to be broken this summer.
