(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Barrington officials are working to improve the safety at rail crossings after the tragic death of 17-year-old Barrington High School student Marin Lacson, who was struck by a train while crossing the tracks at Route 59 and Main Street.

It happened in January, and at a recent board meeting, Barrington Village President Karen Darch said the community is still processing Marin's death.

Darch thanked a group of parents who have been volunteering as crossing guards.

"Sometimes the worst situations bring out the best in Barrington," she said. "I'm thankful — I think we're all thankful — for the volunteers in the community who have stepped up."

Darch said the village has increased the presence of uniformed officers at rail crossings and has created a new rail safety page on their website to help keep residents up to speed on enhanced safety measures.

They are still in talks with the Illinois Commerce Commission and the Illinois Department of Transportation about installing pedestrian gates.
