LAKE FOREST, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams has resigned.
The news of the resignation -- Williams cited health and family reasons -- comes after coach Matt Eberflus fielded questions Wednesday about the coordinator, including whether he still had a job.
"I don't have any update right now," Eberflus said.
He gave similar answers when asked if he anticipates Williams returning this season and if the two have spoken.
Williams was in his second season with Chicago. He missed last week's game at Tampa Bay, with Eberflus calling plays in his place. Later Wednesday, an attorney for Williams talked with 670 The Score about the circumstances of the resignation.
Eberflus, a former defensive coordinator with Indianapolis, said he is likely to serve as defensive coordinator when the Bears (0-2) visit Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend.
Eberflus said the experience of his staff will help.
"I think with the experience that we have on defense, I don't think that's an issue," he said.
