CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The return of car thieves to a North Beverly neighborhood home this week has triggered fear and anger in the community but, according to an alderman, police have two persons-of-interest being questioned for the crimes.
19th Ward Ald. Matt O’Shea is confident police have evidence on suspects in a carjacking two weeks ago and a car theft from the same family this week on 93rd and Pleasant in North Beverly.
The alderman said neighbors offered all kinds of video to police.
“They tracked these individuals, going block to block in North Beverly,” O’Shea said. “They were hunting. They were looking for a victim walking up and down the street for a period of time.”
O’Shea said carjackers got one car but two key fobs in the first incident on Nov. 2 and came back with the second key fob to steal the second car this week. The carjacking was seen in a video that went viral on social media.
“[It’s] one of many examples of how brazen the criminal element we have working the streets all across our city. There is absolutely no fear, no concern of being apprehended, of being prosecuted,” the alderman said.
Ald. O’Shea said the crimes have had an effect on his community.
“It’s not just alarm and fear, it’s anger,” said O’Shea. “It’s anger of: When is enough enough for our judicial partners to start to do their job, to prosecute these people, to get them off the street and to put them in jail?”
The alderman said incidents like these deserve the attention of federal prosecutors in addition to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
“We need to start to hold these people accountable. If you commit a crime with a gun, you need to be in jail. Period,” O’Shea said.
The alderman also said more people need to start calling 911 if they notice anything suspicious.
