CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Chicago alderman is back to camping out on the city’s South Side after a nearby shooting over the weekend shut down his efforts.

Seventeenth Ward Alderman David Moore has been camping out at West 73rd Place, between Ada and Racine, in Englewood to get the City to address a nearby open air drug market.

“Car after car after car, they don’t care who’s watching, and so we see this open-air drug market…They hand money and whatever drug that they’re selling,” Moore told WBBM.

Early Sunday morning, gunshots rang out while Moore was recording a Facebook Live video.

Chicago Police said a man and woman were struck in the drive-by shooting. No one from Moore’s office was hurt.

He’s now back to conducting his daily business from 73rd Place and told WBBM he’ll be there until Chicago Police, state and federal law enforcement crack down on the drug activity.

“If they come up with a real strategy tomorrow, and say, ‘alderman, this our strategy for dealing with this,’” I’m gone. I don’t want to be out here,” Moore said.

Moore said that he intends to sleep on the block, overnight in a tent, for several weeks if necessary. He added that if this type of open-air drug market activity were taking place in more affluent communities, police would immediately shut it down.
