(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of Chicago's more conservative aldermen wants to make the city's Welcoming City ordinance a bit tighter for some undocumented immigrants.
Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, disagrees it would make Chicago less welcoming, but he wants to change rules that limit police cooperation with federal Immigration authorities.
Chicago police should be allowed to hand over undocumented people arrested or convicted of gang crimes, drug offenses, prostitution or sex crimes involving children, he said.
Asked if he really means that suspects – those not convicted of a crime -- should be turned over to the feds, Lopez replied that police don't randomly arrest people.
Lopez’s comments come as the Chicago City Council have a $25 million settlement for two men who were falsely arrested, tried and convicted for a murder they didn't commit.
Lopez voted against that settlement.
