(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Algonquin Township man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies after the Kane County Sheriff’s Office accused him of sexually assaulting his girlfriend over New Year’s weekend.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman was held at knifepoint by her boyfriend, 32-year-old Patricio Salas, in the bedroom of a home near Natoma and Manhatas Trails for several hours during the early morning of Dec. 30, 2023.
The woman, whose identity was not released, was unable to leave and tried to call 911 for help, but officials said Salas took her phone. Authorities said the woman managed to text “help” to her brother-in-law, who arrived at the home.
Officials said the brother-in-law got into a fight with Salas, during which the woman was able to escape the bedroom.
When law enforcement arrived at the home at about 6:30 a.m., Salas had already fled the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The woman was visibly injured, and first responders provided medical attention.
Authorities said officers found the 32-year-old a short time later just down the road, where Salas crashed his vehicle and suffered minor injuries. After he was cleared by medical staff, Salas was taken into custody.
In an update shared Tuesday, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said charges against Salas had been upgraded to aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon after more evidence was collected and processed.
He was also charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault in a manner that threatens the life of a victim, aggravated domestic battery strangle, and aggravated unlawful restraing.
