(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A litter of puppies is getting a new lease on life, thanks to a Northern Indiana police department.

Six adorable puppies were discovered Monday in a tote bin on the side of the road in South Bend, Indiana.

Police Director of Communications Ashley O’Chap said a concerned citizen brought the dogs to the police station because the local animal shelter is currently dealing with a parvo outbreak.

And while many joked about taking the dogs home, one employee actually stepped up.

"We do have a former officer who now works in our crime lab who is like an animal whisperer, and he's been involved in all these dog calls. He’s like, 'I'll foster them for however long they need me to,’” O’Chap said.

The police employee will foster the pups until it’s safe for them to go to the shelter and then hopefully get adopted.
