(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The mayor of Alsip says many residents are struggling to get their mail on time and faults the U.S. Postal Service for taking on too many contracts with big delivery companies.
Alsip Mayor John Ryan has posted some of his frustrations with the USPS on the village’s Facebook page.
“I believe the biggest problem they’re having is, they took on too many contracts. They’ve got contracts with DHL, Fedex and Amazon that are overwhelming their system," he said.
Mayor Ryan says if you add the complications from COVID-19, the delivery system has been slowed too much.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, says he has met with regional Postal Service leadership. They have asked mail carriers in five surrounding states to come to Illinois to help deliver a backlog of packages and envelopes.
