CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A shortage of anesthesia specialists continues at a suburban hospital, where some medical procedures have been delayed as a result.

The shortage of anesthesia providers at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin began after talks to renew a contract with United Anesthesia Associates, a private practice that had provided the specialists for many years, were called off by Advocate Aurora Health Care.

United's Dr. Sanjay Sutaria said that happened after United said it needed more money to hire and retain anesthesia providers.

"In order to do that, we were asking for compensation from the hospital and I think that was probably gave hesitance or pause from Sherman hospital," Sutaria told WBBM Newsradio.

In a statement, Advocate Aurora Health Care said the situation only affects Sherman Hospital and less than 100 noncritical or elective procedures.

The company claimed no urgent or emergency procedures were affected or were the delivery of babies and that Sherman Hospital should have enough anesthesia specialists no later than Sept. 20 through a new provider.
