(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending masks indoors for everyone in high-risk parts of the country, but Chicago’s top doctor said the city is not there yet.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot has already said the city will reimpose a mask mandate if it starts seeing more than 200 new coronavirus cases a day.
Lightfoot’s health commissioner, Dr. Allison Arwady, said her department is watching the numbers to determine if or when to mandate masks indoors again.
“I want to do that based on our local data and our local risk. And I want to do it at a time where really the risk is significantly higher,” she said Tuesday.
“At this point, luckily, it remains in that lower risk. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get there. We may.”
Dr. Arwady says this weekend’s Lollapalooza is still a go; organizers are requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for attendees.
Arwady said people who attend the concert festival do not necessarily need to get tested afterward. Maybe avoid any slam-dancing, she said.
“Masks can help and perhaps not going to the mosh pit,” she said.
Chicago now has 14 states plus the Virgin Islands on the city’s travel advisory list.
