(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Applications are now being accepted from Chicagoans who want to vote by mail in the Nov. 5 general election this year.

Voters within the city of Chicago can now request a ballot to vote by mail for the 2024 presidential general election. The applications available online at Chicagoelections.gov.

Election officials say you can request a ballot in English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Polish, Korean or Tagalog paper.

Paper applications are also available on the website and you can also sign up for the vote by mail permanent roster.

“We've seen a lot of interest in that. Over the last few weeks, nearly 140,000 voters are now signed up for that,” said Max Bever, a spokesman for the Chicago Board of Elections.

Now, for people who previously applied for that permanent roster, you shouldn't have to do anything. You should automatically receive your ballot.

The deadline to apply is Oct. 31 and ballots should start being mailed out on Sept. 26.

Bever says officials see interest growing in this year's elections.

“The last few election cycles in Chicago, we've seen over 200,000 people sign up to register to vote. It's very possible that we could see over 300,000, 350,000. There's also a surge of interest. We've been seeing in people checking their registration, new election judges coming in, people who are looking to serve in this upcoming November election.”
