(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The company behind the water system failure that impacted Hawthorn Woods for days over the Fourth of July weekend and beyond has issued a public apology.

Colleen Arnold, president of the Aqua division of Essential Utilities, addressed a large crowd during a village board meeting held at a church.

"First and foremost I apologize on behalf of Aqua. I want to convey that I own this, along with our operators at the base level," she said. "There are things we couldn't control but what we could control was our response."

Neil Koplitz was among residents who spoke.

"The people who are answering in the call centers-not only have a lack of knowledge, but also a lack of customer service...a lack of empathy," he said.

The company said it initially thought demand was the problem. It was later determined that there was water.
