(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The recently ousted official who led the city of Chicago's public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic has a new job.

Dr. Allison Arwady will become the director of the National Center of Injury Prevention and Control in January. It is under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Arwady said she’d hoped to remain working as city health commissioner in the post-COVID era. She was fired by Mayor Brandon Johnson, who succeeded Arwady’s former boss, Lori Lightfoot.

Dr. Arwady says her experience in Chicago will give her a solid background to deal with the challenges of her new post.

While Arwady's job is based in Atlanta, she said she plans to maintain her Chicago home and return frequently to the city, which she calls her "long-term home."
