CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Tearful parents and teachers watched as ASPIRA charter schools board members voted Wednesday night to close their Albany Park school.

“We tried everything.” That’s what the ASPIRA president said as the board of directors voted unanimously to close Haugan Middle School.

ABC 7 Chicago reported Edgar Lopez told parents and teachers gathered at ASPIRA Business and Finance High School there will be more charter closures unless something changes in Chicago and CPS.

The district has not been giving them enough money, the leaders say, and enrollment has plummeted.

Enrollment has fallen from 800 students at one point to only 83. One parent said her daughter made friends and had caring teachers at HOG-in after being bullied at another school.

A teacher compared the situation to a family that’s being broken up. The school is slated to close June 30.

WBBM has reached out to ASPIRA and CPS for comment.
