NWS survey so far confirms at least 7 tornadoes struck Chicago region Wednesday, plus 1 waterspout

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Survey teams with the National Weather Service have confirmed at least seven tornadoes touched down Wednesday in the Chicago region, causing significant damage to some areas.

The NWS tweeted its progress Thursday afternoon as it assessed what transpired a day earlier:

--An EF-1 tornado with winds of up to 110 miles per hour struck Burr Ridge and Stickney, causing damage to businesses and snapping and uprooting trees.

--Two tornadoes also were identified in Elgin, officials said – one an EF-1 and the other an EF-0 with wind speeds of up to 85 miles per hour.

--In McHenry and Lake Counties, an EF-1 tornado struck Huntley (max winds: 90 mph); an EF-0 was in Barrington (max winds: 80 mph); and an EF-0 struck Long Grove (max winds: 70 mph).

--An EF-0 with peak estimated winds of 85 mph tornado occurred in northeastern Oswego and eastern Boulder Hill.

In addition, NWS officials said a waterspout occurred a mile or two off North Avenue Beach, based on video evidence.

The surveys continue. The Chicago region was under multiple tornado warnings Wednesday evening.

Wednesday, NWS officials said a tornado was on the ground near O'Hare Airport around 7 p.m.
