CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Ride-share drivers met in front of the Chicago offices of Uber Friday afternoon to remember one of their own: 38-year-old Joe Schelstraete, who was shot and killed May 31 after he was robbed in Cicero.
Kim Bova, Schelstraete’s aunt and family representative, said they’re trying to comprehend why the killers took her nephew’s life.
“They didn’t have to shoot him. And I’m sure a lot of people that have violent crimes against them - they all wonder why. But we’re all struggling with, why did you have to shoot him? He surrendered whatever you wanted,” Bova said at a vigil held for Schelstraete.
Authorities said one person was arrested but was released after no charges were filed.
Ride-share drivers stood with Bova, who faulted Uber for not doing more to protect drivers.
“Joe’s murder could’ve been prevented. There’s blood on Uber’s hands,” she said.
Drivers called on Uber to require passengers to take a selfie to send to the company before they’re allowed to ride.
