AURORA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A helicopter will be used this morning to go on the attack against an invasive species of moth.
A low-flying helicopter spraying a pesticide will be aiming to kill spongy moths in the Oakhurst Forest Preserve area on the east side of Aurora.
Spongy moths are formerly known as gypsy moths and are known to destroy a number of species of trees. This is the second week the Illinois Department of Agriculture will be spraying the pesticide in Aurora.
The material is said to not be toxic to people or animals. It’s a bacterium that occurs naturally in the soil, but contains a substance that’s toxic to certain caterpillars and moths.
