An announcement from Aurora’s police department has raised new questions about whether organizers of Sunday’s Pride parade will be able to host their event as scheduled.

Aurora Police said that in order to hold the 2022 Pride Parade, the department will need a similar number of officers required for the 2019 event, and officials said finding them has not been easy.

In May, organizers informed police taking part in the parade that no uniforms or service weapons would be allowed.

The job is offered to officers as an overtime, extra security assignment. In order to reach full staffing levels, Pride parade organizers attempted finding help from other jurisdictions, but they have been unsuccessful.

The statement from Aurora police said the event is currently 20 officers short of the minimum. Officials added: "Unless the additional officers are secured shortly, APD cannot recommend to the city that the event can proceed as planned."

Organizers of the Aurora Pride parade said they’re investigating all options available in response to the announcement from Aurora police.
