(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mayor of Aurora wants the organizers of the city’s Pride Parade to reconsider its ban on police officers participating in the event in uniform.
Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said in a statement that it’s baffling how an event that is supposed to be focused on and celebrating equity, diversity and inclusion is now choosing to exclude others.
He’s asking the Aurora Pride Parade organizers to reconsider their decision and to get back to him with an answer later today. The parade organizers had written in their news release a few days ago that many in the LGBTQ+ community feel uneasy about police in uniform based on experiences they and others have had with officers.
Aurora police said their police department was one of the first in the state to have a liaison officer to the LGBTQ+ community.
