(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Aurora’s police chief has announced plans to retire over the summer.
In a letter Monday, Kristen Ziman said she’ll mark her 30th year in the Aurora Police Department on July 29 and will step down Aug. 6.
“I am fortunate that several opportunities have come my way, and I’m also pursuing some new adventures of my own. I will be taking this time to decide exactly what is next for me,” Ziman said.
Ziman was appointed to the top police job in 2016 after making her way up the ranks. Her tenure as police chief of Aurora -- the second largest city in Illinois -- included the February 2019 workplace shooting at Henry Pratt Co., in which an employee fatally shot five co-workers. Six police officers who responded were injured.
She was a finalist for Chicago police superintendent last year. Mayor Lori Lightfoot selected David Brown.
