Illinois authorities investigating sale of fake vaccination cards; Is it criminal?

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Authorities are investigating the sale of fake vaccination cards and the sellers could find themselves in legal trouble.

Fake vaccination cards are being sold on popular websites like eBay and Craigslist, among other places, and the prices are all over the board ranging from a couple of dollars to a few hundred dollars. They are often described as "novelty items."

CBS 2 found an ad posted by a seller in west suburban Winfield offering blank vaccination cards, for "replacement and novelty use only." The cards were listed for $5 each and required a minimum order of five cards. The ad even had a disclaimer reading: “I am not liable for any illegal use.”

Former federal prosecutor Steven Block was asked if this is criminal.

"The government’s very protective of its information, and there is a CDC logo on there. So whoever is selling these cards could be opening themselves up for civil liability for trademark infringements and it's really something they should think twice about continuing to do," he said.

“The bottom line is there is no legitimate reason why someone would be selling a blank COVID-19 vaccine form."

Block said people are trying to profit off of the pandemic.

"It brings out the best in people and it brings out the worst in people," he said.

The Illinois Attorney General's Office is looking into this and suggested that people get a free card with their vaccination.
