CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — People in one western suburb are pondering the future of a well-known pond.
The state of Illinois said the Challenge Dam on the Fox River in Batavia is in poor shape and has to go. But the removal of the dam would also drain Depot Pond and turn the local body of water into a mudflat.
The state of Illinois will pay to remove the dam but taxpayers in Batavia will pay for whatever replaces it while preserving some or all of the pond.
The Kane County Chronicle reported people in Batavia heard about five proposals at a public hearing on Saturday.
One includes installing an earthen berm to preserve the pond and the other called for the pond to be partially drained and replaced by parkland.
