(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — At first, it seems like a stroke of luck — someone unexpectedly deposits money into your Venmo account. But beware — this could be a setup by fraudsters, and the real surprise isn’t a good one!
Scammers have put a digital twist on fake check scams with the "fake Venmo deposit scam."
They send a deposit using a stolen credit card, making it appear legitimate.
When they ask you to return the money, don’t fall for it — the charge will later be reversed by the credit card company, leaving you at a loss.
Be wary if someone claims they accidentally sent you money. Never share personal information and contact Venmo directly if you have questions.
