(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Legendary Bear Steve “Mongo” McMichael has been released from the hospital following treatment for sepsis and pneumonia, according to a family spokesperson.
McMichael, diagnosed with the nervous system disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, in January of 2021, was admitted Thursday night to the intensive care unit. A spokesperson for the family said he became unconscious with sepsis.
He received IV antibiotics and his condition has improved. He was able to return home Tuesday night. Mongo’s family said he no longer has sepsis but will remain on IV antibiotics to treat the pneumonia.
Two weeks ago, McMichael was named one of 12 senior semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
His wife Misty hopes he can live long enough to see a possible induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“He needs to see himself enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Please pray for him to get through this,” Misty said last week.
The Seniors Committee will meet August 22 and choose three candidates for final consideration.
McMichael, famed member of the Super Bowl champion ‘85 Bears, played 13 seasons for the franchise and ranks second all-time in team history with 92.5 sacks.
