(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Chicago Bears are expected to unveil plans Wednesday for a domed lakefront stadium.
A planning advisory sent Monday said the NFL franchise will offer details about a “state-of-the-art, publicly owned enclosed stadium, along with additional green and open space with access to the lakefront for families and fans, on the Museum Campus.”
The highly anticipated announcement comes as the Bears have invited high-level media representatives to a Soldier Field meeting at noon Wednesday featuring Bears Chairman George McCaskey and President and CEO Kevin Warren.
Previously, the Bears purchased the site of the former Arlington Park race track in the northwest suburbs for a potential new stadium. But recently, the team has signaled it would like to stay on the Chicago lakefront, an idea that generally is agreeable to Mayor Brandon Johnson.
The sticking points are how much taxpayer assistance such a project would require and whether it’s legally possible to build it on the protected Chicago lakefront. The Bears have said they would put up $2 billion in private financing toward the effort.
