(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After 40 years in downtown Joliet, a locally famous chicken restaurant is closing for good next Tuesday.
Pat Reimer and her 81-year-old husband, Ken, own the original Chicken-N-Spice restaurant and have decided to retire on Pat's 78th birthday.
The work has taken its toll on her body, Reimer said, and she decided to retire after learning she needed a second shoulder replacement.
She said talking her 81-year-old husband into retiring was challenging, because he loves the work so much.
The final day is Sept. 14. Restaurant owners have invited the public to come in from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for “some cake and breast chunks,” the latter a reference to Chicken-N-Spice’s signature dish.
Reimer anticipates Joliet Junior College, which owns the property, will tear down the restaurant and put a parking lot there.
Chicken-N-Spice restaurants under different owners will continue operating in Orland Hills and Shorewood and, yes, will keep offering chicken breast chunks.
