INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana parents can now have their 5-to-11 year-olds vaccinated against COVID-19 and judging from the turnout on Wednesday, there will be no shortage of takers.

Cars were streaming into some of Indiana’s mass vaccination sites Wednesday including the Hamilton County fair grounds and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as word spread that shots were available without appointments at the sites that opened early.

"We didn’t expect this large of a turnout," said Janice VanMetre, director of nursing for Hamilton County’s health department.

One mom told CBS 4 Indianapolis that her children got off the school bus and headed straight to a vaccination site. They stood in line for hours. She said her 11-year-old wanted the shot as an early Christmas gift.

"She's been waiting for this day for so long and I think that's how a lot of adults as well."

Parents can make appointments at ourshot.in.gov or at doctor's offices and pharmacies as well.
