
You can’t visit the Pullman Porter Museum during the pandemic, but 2021 will still be a big year for the Far South Side historic site.
The Pullman District was designated a National Monument under President Barack Obama, making it part of the National Park Service.
It’s the site of first industrial planned community and home to the first predominately African-American labor union chartered by the AFL-CIO — the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
David Peterson Jr., president and executive director of the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, said the venue should reopen in April. That is around the birthday of its namesake, Randolph, who organized the union.
In partnership with the National Park Service, the museum’s factory exhibit is slated to open on Labor Day.
