The Illinois House has approved a bill that would make it easier for some college students to become substitute teachers.
Representative Anne Stava-Murray of Downers Grove said her bill would allow college education majors with at least 90 credit hours to get substitute teaching licenses from the state before they graduate.
"In the last few years and especially recently due to the the COVID-19 pandemic, we are facing a shortage of teachers in our schools," Stava-Murray said.
She said allowing qualified college students to work as substitutes will make it easier for schools to ease the shortage of teachers.
The bill now heads to the Illinois Senate.
